The Down Side of Living on the Coast

Generally living on the sea coast is wonderful and I love the view of the expanse of Hampton Roads harbor each night as I drive home to Hampton from Norfolk. There is a downside, however, in that when it comes to this time of year one has the thought of hurricanes somewhere in the back of your mind. As the image above indicates, things could get interesting later in the week. The photo below shows our experience with the last major storm system that swept through the region back in 2009.

Those into surfing are relishing the potential waves for the East Coast Surfing Championships that kick off this evening in Virginia Beach. Irene could bring great waves or it could knock out the finale of the event if it comes too close to shore as it sweeps northward. The rest of us will be watching and keeping our fingers crossed as the week goes on. Maybe it was a good thing that we re-bagged all of our sand bags that we keep for these types of events.
