More Hypocrisy: Anti-gay MP Iris Robinson's Lover Said to Have Been under 21

I written before about Irish gay-hater, Iris Robinson (pictured at left), a Member of Parliament who condemned gays as sinners, advocated for reparative therapy, and pushed an anti-equality agenda. Recently, Ms. Robinson announced that she would be retiring from politics for health and family reasons. Turns out, Robinson must have been studying GOP politicians in the USA. It seems that the real story behind her resignation is that she was having an adulterous affair with Kirk McCambley (at far left), a man believed to be one third her age. Oh dear, another homophobic sinner caught by her own disregard of the "family values" standards she would impose on others. Of course, when it comes to hypocrisy, Ms. Robinson is in the good company of the child abusing Catholic Church. But maybe she just thought she really WAS Anne Bancroft in the movie, The Graduate. Both Pink News and the Daily Mail have more details. First some highlights from Pink News:
*
Homophobic Northern Ireland MP Iris Robinson's affair was thought to have been with a young man aged under 21 at the time. News channel UTV, which broke the story of her affair and suicide attempt yesterday, reported the claim this evening. Robinson, who is 60, said the affair and suicide attempt took place in March 2008. She said the "brief" liaison began "completely innocently" when she offered support to someone who had suffered a family death.
*
Earlier today, The Times reported that a BBC investigation into the finances of Robinson and her husband Peter, who is Northern Ireland's first minister, was what prompted her to reveal details of her affair and attempted suicide. The "embarrassing" television documentary was to be broadcast with allegations over the first family's financial affairs.
*
Robinson, a fundamentalist Christian, was labelled a bigot for a series of outbursts last year in which she made offensive comments about homosexuality. In 2008, she told the Belfast Telegraph that homosexuality was comparable to paedophilia. She also told a radio show that homosexuality was a mental illness and could be "cured".
*
Not surprisingly, the Dail Mail has some juicier tid bits on the affair and refers to McCambley as obinson's toyboy. Here are some highlights:
*
Last night sources close to Mrs Robinson revealed her lover's name to be Kirk McCambley - and they said he was 19 when the pair became involved 18 months ago. . . . They apparently met in March 2008 at the funeral of Mr McCambley's father, a friend of Mrs Robinson. The young man, now 21, owns the Lock Keeper's Inn in south Belfast. Details of the affair were revealed by the BBC in an interview with her husband. Last night it was claimed that Mrs Robinson organised a £50,000 loan to help her toyboy lover set up the restaurant business.
*
Mrs Robinson and Mr McCambley's affair lasted for around five months, ending after they allegedly rowed over the repayment of the money. . . In her statement she said: 'Everyone is paying a heavy price for my actions... I am so, so sorry. It had no emotional or lasting meaning, but my actions have devastated my life, and the lives of those around me.'
*
Her name will bring to mind the fictional Mrs Robinson, played by Anne Bancroft who had an affair with a man half her age, played by Dustin Hoffman, in the 1967 film The Graduate.

Catholic Portugal Set to Legalize Gay Marriage

It is interesting to consider that many of those who emigrated to America in the early period the nation's colonization were motivated by a desire to escape religious based discrimination in Europe. Now the circle has come full circle with most of the European nations recognizing the separation of church and state and that religion has no place in the civil laws while in the USA the GOP and Christianists reject that understanding. Indeed, they seek to impose religious based discrimination on those who do not subscribe to their religious beliefs, particularly gays. It is likewise interesting (actually very distressing) that Virginia - which provided so many of the great thinkers of the Founding Fathers of the nation - is one of the worse offenders when it comes to encoding religious based discrimination in the state's civil laws. As for Portugal, I am shocked that the Roman Catholic Church not thrusting itself into the issue. Perhaps seeing the Church in melt down in Ireland the decision was made to maintain a low profile. Here are some highlights from Agence France-Presse (AFP):
*
LISBON — Catholic Portugal, traditionally one of Europe's most socially conservative countries, is expected to approve the legalisation of gay marriage on Friday with a minimum of fuss. With the governing Socialists and other left-wing parties enjoying a strong majority, the new law is likely to sail through the first reading debate and gain final approval before a visit by Pope Benedict XVI, due in Portugal in May.
*
In contrast to Spain, where the lead-up to the legalisation of gay marriage in 2005 brought hundreds of thousands of demonstrators onto the streets, the bill in Portugal has provoked only muted opposition even from the right. While normally vocal on the role of marriage and the family in society, the Catholic Church has refused to mobilise on a subject which, according to Lisbon's Cardinal Patriarch Jose Policarpo, is "parliament's responsibility".
*
"I think the Portuguese people have learnt one of the fundamental tenets of democracy: respect for the rights of the individual,"
Miguel Vale de Almeida, Portugal's first openly-gay lawmaker who was elected in September, told AFP.
*
Vale de Almeida, who is the Socialists' pointman on the legislation, said there is now a political majority in favour of gay marriage and that it is "too simplistic to link Catholicism and conservatism."
*
Deputies are also expected on Friday to vote two other bills submitted by the Green party, the Left Bloc and others which would grant gay and lesbian couples the right to adopt children. If the gay marriage proposals do pass through parliament, they will the have to go through a parliamentary commission before coming back for the final approval.
*
According to media reports, both the government and the Catholic Church wants the gay marriage issue to be resolved before the visit of the pope, scheduled for May 11-14.

Washington Post: Uganda's Bill an Outrage

While it is a strong editorial condemning Uganda's proposed "kill the gays" bill, the Washington Post's editorial fails to connect the dots between American Christianists and the pending legislation in Uganda. Only by being exposed to the full light of day will future anti-gay efforts by Christian extremists be diminished. It is also important that the American public be made aware of just how dishonest and crazy these homophobes actually are - despite efforts by those like Rick Warren to distance themselves from the results of their handiwork. Ideally, the nutcase Scott Lively should be made the poster boy for the Christian Right because even though those like Warren, James Dobson, Tony Perkins and Maggie Gallagher try to put a kinder face on their anti-gay agenda, their goal of stripping gays of legal rights and protections is ultimately not so very different. Here are some editorial highlights:
*
THE ANTI-HOMOSEXUALITY Bill of 2009 is an ugly and ignorant piece of legislation being considered in Uganda. If it is approved, the gay people of that nation would be subject to life in prison. This retreat from the death sentence originally proposed should neither be celebrated nor considered a concession by the government in response to pressure from the United States and other nations. The proposal is barbaric. That it is even being considered puts Uganda beyond the pale of civilized nations.
*
The law would apply to citizens or permanent residents of Uganda, and would cover behavior both in and outside that country. The measure would turn neighbor against neighbor by requiring those with knowledge of a gay person to report them to police within 24 hours or risk three years in prison. A seven-year jail term awaits the Ugandan who "aids, abets, [or] counsels" homosexuals. And anyone convicted of "aggravated homosexuality," which could mean someone who is HIV-positive and is intimate with another person of the same sex, could "suffer death."
*
[S]entencing men and women to life imprisonment because of their sexual orientation is an atrocity. Gays and lesbians would be punished by their own government for who they are. Contrary to the backward thinking of the Ugandan government, being gay is not a choice. But pushing homophobic laws that foment hate is.
*
If Uganda approves the anti-homosexuality bill, it risks making itself a pariah among nations.

*
Not only should Uganda be a pariah, but so too should the Christianists who set the stage for the introduction of such legislation. It is beyond time that the world recognize that Christian extremists are just as big of threat to peace and security as are Islamic extremist. The mindset is truly the same.

Loudoun County Enacts Nondiscrimination Protections Based on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity

As I have noted many times, Virginia is an extremely unfriendly state if one happens to be an LGBT citizen. There are ZERO state laws that protect us from employment or housing discrimination and the newly elected statewide officials have severe difficulty understanding the concept of religious freedom for anyone other than Bible beaters and ultraconservative Catholics. Thus, the only protections one can hope for come from local municipalities that grant such employment protections. Each week I receive calls from LGBT individuals considering a move to Virginia and to be candid with them I have to tell them that they will have little protections under the law in Virginia. Indeed, I typically suggest that they look elsewhere if they want a gay friendly legal climate. Loudoun County in Northern Virginia has figured out that Virginia's unfriendly climate makes that county non-competitive in the workplace recruiting world and just passed its own local non-discrimination protections for county employees. Naturally, the Bible beaters are incensed. The Loudoun Independent has a great editorial taking the homophobes to task. Here are some highlights:
*
It seems outrageous, but prior to this week it was a perfectly plausible outcome for an employee of the Loudoun County government who happened to be gay or lesbian. There will doubtless be those who become histrionic about a Jan. 5 decision by the Board of Supervisors to enact a county policy not to discriminate based on sexual orientation or gender identity, claiming either that gays and lesbians are being given “special rights” or that the decision adds to the moral decay of the country by condoning a certain lifestyle. There is credence in neither argument.
*
Talking to reporters after Tuesday's vote, Board Chairman Scott York (I-At Large) derided the motion, stating that it was unnecessary and that the discussion was “a waste of 20 minutes."
*
This is the response of someone who does not understand the issue. Virginia has passed legislation banning same-sex marriage and has consistently not acted to protect the constitutional rights of gays and lesbians. (Although, Gov. Tim Kaine did mandate in 2006 that state agencies not discriminate based on sexual orientation.) In the most recent election, Virginia elected three socially conservative officials for Governor, Lt. Governor and Attorney General. While social conservative ideals were not part of the storefront of their respective campaigns, none of them are likely to defend the rights of gays and lesbians. Attorney General-elect Ken Cuccinelli (R) is on record with his belief that state policies should reflect his belief that “homosexual acts are wrong.”
*
With that in mind, existing county employees and qualified applicants researching Virginia’s current approach to equal protection for gays and lesbians might feel that having a nondiscrimination policy in writing is extremely comforting. Those listening to the borderline-incomprehensible arguments against the proposal by Supervisor Eugene Delgaudio (R-Sterling) would likely demand that those protections be in place.
*
A strong nondiscrimination policy attracts stronger applicants (gay and straight) and it allows those gays and lesbians already working for the county a sense of respect and security that will allow them to dedicate themselves to their jobs. The decision to add sexual orientation and gender identity to the county’s nondiscrimination policy tells residents and employees that so long as you do your job well and pay your taxes, then you’re welcome here. It may have been true before, but sometimes it’s nice to say it out loud. Was it a waste of time to guarantee that Loudoun continues to not discriminate?
Absolutely not.
*
Virginia cities like Norfolk and Hampton need to wake up to the fact that they need to move into the 21st century and enact similar protections. Otherwise top employment candidates will continue to move elsewhere and Virginia will continue to have its most talented LGBT citizens often decide to leave the state.

Market For LGBT Travel Still Grows

In a still struggling economy, one travel segment continues to grow - LGBT travel. Thus, one would think that localities and regions dependent upon tourism - Williamsburg is one such place locally that has been hard hit by the economic down turn - would get the message that anti-gay laws are a bad thing financially. After all, what LGBT individual wants to visit a state where dogs and cats get more legal protections than LGBT citizens (not that I'm against dogs and cats). Yet states like Virginia - and Neanderthals like Bob McDonnell, Randy Forbes and Eric Cantor - go out of their way to induce the sought after tourist dollars to go elsewhere by keeping gays third class citizens. Believe it or not guys, we gays can recognize a place that is not welcoming and which has legislatively approved homophobia. It's particularly ironic since Virginia Governor elect McDonnell is slashing salaries for cabinet officers, etc., because the state is in such a financial bind. Increased tourism revenues are particularly needed now. But where do many Virginia gays go to vacation? Places that are more gay friendly and OUTSIDE of Virginia (the boyfriend and I NEVER vacation in Virginia). NY1 looks at the still vibrant gay travel market. Here are some highlights:
*
In this down economy, at least one market that has seen growth in the beleaguered tourism industry. Travel directed for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender vacationers is proving to be recession-resistant. "Gay and lesbian travelers have not been pulling back on travel spending, the number of vacations they are taking or the number of days they are spending on vacation the way the general public is," says Passport Magazine editor Andrew Mersmann. Data show that a gay couple spends $7,000 on a week's trip, about $2,000 more than their heterosexual counterparts.
*
The weather for an LGBT trip can be either hot or cold, but the biggest turnoff is an intolerant climate. "We are not going to book a whole lot of travel to Jamaica anytime soon because there is such systemic homophobia and violence against the gay and lesbian community, it's not safe to go there. And you don't want to spend your dollars there," says Mersmann.
*
The gay community will generally find it smooth sailing onboard cruise ships. "There are all-gay cruises, and on most of the large cruise ships there tend to be gay groups with specific events, cocktail parties," says Mersmann.

*
If Virginia and Virginians were smart, they'd take down the "gays not wanted" signs and not only hang onto Virginia gay dollars, but gather them in from other states as well. Gay friendly Key West will be getting our travel dollars soon.

Congressman Randy Forbes Insults Thomas Jefferson's Memory

I have addressed before my concerns over the inability of Virginia Congressman Randy Forbes - one of my former law school classmates - to grasp the concept of freedom of religion so strongly advocated by Thomas Jefferson and embodied in Virginia's Statute for Religious Freedom (which Virginia Republicans utterly ignore). Indeed, this statute was one of the three things that Jefferson was most proud of and which is on his gravestone at Monticello in Charlottesville, Virginia. Now, Forbes has thrust himself into the anti-gay agenda to overturn the recently passed legislation in Washington, D.C., that allows for marriage equality. Joining Forbes in an amicus brief supporting a voter referendum that the homophobes hope would repeal the newly enacted marriage rights is another Virginia Congressman, Eric Cantor. It's disgusting and Forbes needs to mail his law degree diploma back to Mr. Jefferson's university so that it can be burned. Mr. Forbes truly needs to consider moving to Iran or some other nation ruled by similar religious extremists. Here are some highlights from the Washington Post:
*
Thirty-nine congressional Republicans, including House Minority Leader John Boehner (Ohio) and Minority Whip Eric Cantor (Va.), have filed an amicus brief in D.C. Superior Court calling for a voter referendum on whether to legalize same-sex marriage in the District.

In the filing, U.S. senators James Inhofe (Okla.) and Roger Wicker (Miss.) and 37 House Republicans align with Bishop Harry Jackson, pastor of Hope Christian Church, in asking the court to reverse a D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics decision prohibiting the same-sex marriage question to be put before voters.

the court brief underscores the challenge same-sex marriage supporters face in trying to protect the new law in both the current and future Congresses, particularly if the GOP retakes control.

In addition to the two senators and Boehner and Cantor, the brief was signed by U.S. Reps. Robert Aderholt (Ala.), Todd Akin (Mo.), Michele Bachmann (Minn.), J. Gresham Barrett (S.C.), Roscoe Bartlett (Md.), Marsha Blackburn (Tenn.), John Boozman (Ark.), Jason Chaffetz (Utah), John Fleming (La.), J. Randy Forbes (Va.), Virginia Foxx (N.C.), Scott Garrett (N.J.), Phil Gingrey (Ga.), Louie Gohmert (Tex.), Jeb Hensarling (Tex.), Wally Herger (Calif.), Walter Jones (N.C.), Jim Jordan (Ohio), Steve King (Iowa), Jack Kingston (Ga.), John Kline (Minn.) Doug Lamborn (Colo.), Robert Latta (Ohio), Don Manzullo (Ill.), Michael McCaul (Tex.), Thaddeus McCotter (Mich.), Patrick McHenry (N.C.), Cathy McMorris Rodgers (Wash.), Jeff Miller (Fla.), Jerry Moran (Kan.), Randy Neugebauer (Tex.), Mike Pence (Ind.), Joe Pitts (Pa.), Mark Souder (Ind.) and Todd Tiahrt (Kan.)
*
If readers see their representative's name listed above, you need to contact their office and voice your displeasure. We cannot permit the wingnuts at FRC, Focus on the Family and similar hate groups give the appearance to those such as Forbes that their actions are going unnoticed or that they will be without negative consequences.

Scott Lively'sAnti-Gay “Nuclear Bomb” in Uganda

Fortunately, more and more blogs and news outlets seem to be slowly adding coverage about the "kill the gays" legislation pending in Uganda. Better yet, increasing focus is being placed on the role played by hysterical, lying Christian activists in setting the stage for such legislation. In the forefront of the lies and bogus anti-gay propaganda disseminated by the (in my opinion, based on my past e-mail exchanges with him) utterly deranged Scott Lively. Aiding and abetting him - even though many are now disavowing their roles - have been The Family, Rick Warren, folks at Exodus International and others of their ilk. Jim Burroway at the Box Turtle Bulletin has secured copies of some of the videos presented by Lively back in March in Uganda. The bulk of the information in the videos is utterly untrue, relies on fraudulent "research" and is contrary to the findings of legitimate medical and mental health associations. These people are a clear and present danger to religious freedom and peace and order and the public needs to wake up to this reality. Jim summarizes the video presentations as follows:
*
This first video explores that “nuclear bomb” and its repercussions. In this video, you will see:
*
■Lively’s defense against being labeled a “hate group” by the Southern Poverty Law Center (
Ex-Gay Watch has posted a longer unedited video segment of his defense),
■Lively’s equating homosexuality with Nazism and fascism, and blaming the 1994 Rwandan genocide on gay people,
■Lively’s reinforcement of the false stereotype of gay people as child molesters,
■Lively denouncing foreign influences to “promote” homosexuality,
■Lively describing AIDS as just punishment for homosexuality,
■and the aftermath of Lively’s “nuclear bomb” in Uganda.
*
Of the three videos we are debuting today, this is the most important as it puts Lively’s presentation in context with existing homophobia in Uganda.
*
In this second video, we show more clips of him pumping up his credentials and expertise. He then goes on to completely mangle the American Psychiatric Association’s definition of “sexual orientation,” conflating it with a completely different category of sexual paraphilias. (
Ex-Gay Watch’s longer unedited video segment is here.)

Andrew Sullivanhas a relevant analysis of what Lively's video speechs reveal. Hopefully, more and more Americans will wake up to what the the Christianist and GOP anti-gay jihad ultimately comes down to. Here's a snippet of what Andrew had to say::
*
Well, here's a video of Lively's talk in Uganda that reveals what he says when he doesn't think he's being watched by Americans. He likens gays to mass killers, as the kind of people who would create a holocaust, as terrible dangers to civilization. This is the core of the Christianist message and the Christianist message is now the core of the GOP. At some point, you have to take these people's words seriously.

Gay Marriage in Iowa Appears Safe for a few Years

Provided the Democrat controlled state legislature refuses to vote on a gay marriage amendment this session - which appears likely at this time - no popular vote can take place until 2014. Not that the Christo-fascists won't be using the gay menace to line their pockets and continue gay bashing in the interim. After all, Maggie Gallagher and her minions DO want to keep paying themselves fat pay checks. One can only hope that after another four years, normal Iowa citizens will see that the world and civilization have not ended because same sex couples have civil legal rights and there will be minimal support to ban gay marriage outside of the swamps of freeper land. In addition, Iowa - unlike backwards Virginia - requires a super majority vote to amend the state's constitution. Here are some highlights from the Chicago Tribune:
*
DES MOINES, Iowa - Gov. Chet Culver and Democratic legislative leaders intend to focus on the state's budget shortfall when the Legislature convenes next week, but activists are working to get gay marriage on the agenda. The Iowa Family Policy Council, a group leading the push to approve a constitutional amendment overturning the court ruling, also is criticizing Culver for issuing a proclamation that supports the rights of transgender people.
*
"Iowans know that Governor Culver does not share their values," said Chuck Hurley, president of the council. "As if the governor's unwillingness to exercise the influence of his office in the defense of marriage wasn't enough, we now know that he is spending his time creating special days celebrating sexual disorientation."
*
Price said the governor felt issuing the proclamation was an appropriate way to honor transgender people who have died. "He believes that all Iowans should be protected from discrimination and abuse," said Price, adding that he thinks Hurley was using the issue to score political points and gain attention in the days before the group's rally.
*
One Iowa spokesman Justin Uebelhor said civil rights shouldn't be put to a vote. "We've never in the history of Iowa had a basic civil rights issue put to a vote," he said. "We don't think it's appropriate." Instead, Uebelhor said lawmakers should focus on creating jobs and helping the state economy. He said those are issues people care about, and "not issues that pit neighbor against neighbor."
*
Culver has said he favors marriage as being between one woman and one man but that he won't support a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. Democrats control both legislative chambers and argue that the state's budget crunch has forced them to shorten the upcoming session, leaving no time for a debate over marriage. Amending the Iowa Constitution is a long process requiring approval in two consecutive general assemblies and a statewide vote. If lawmakers this year don't act on the issue, the soonest it could be on the ballot would be the general election of 2014.

Rhode Island Legislature Overrides Veto of Bill Granting Funeral Rights for Gays

Maggie Gallagher and similar gay-haters pretend that they are only concerned with "protecting marriage." Recent events in Rhode Island where NOM and other religious based bigots convinced the state's governor (pictured at left) to veto a bill that would have granted funeral rights to gay couples proves otherwise. Their true agenda is to diminish and marginalize gay lives in any and every way possible. It's beyond heartless and down right cruel and fortunately the state legislature saw the obvious and overrode the veto. Once again, the self-congratulatory "Christians" are the least Christian of all when one observes their behavior and motives. I truly believe that Ms. Gallagher and her likes view LGBT citizens as less than animals. It sickens me. Here are highlights from the Washington Post:
*
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Rhode Island lawmakers voted Tuesday to allow same-sex and unmarried couples the right to plan the funerals of their late partners, overriding a veto by the governor, who warned it eroded traditional marriage. The bill passed 67-3 in the House and 31-3 in the Senate, and enjoyed support from several Republican lawmakers in the same party as Gov. Don Carcieri, an adamant opponent of same-sex marriage in a state that does not recognize gay unions. The new funeral planning rights also apply to unmarried heterosexual couples.
*
Mark Goldberg, 49, pushed for the legislation after struggling for five weeks to claim the body of his partner of 17 years, Ron Hanby, who committed suicide in October 2008. The state medical examiner would not release Hanby's body to Goldberg because they were not married or relatives, even though the couple had wills and other legal documents attesting to their relationship.
*
To qualify for funeral planning rights, a couple must be at least 18, have lived together for one year and prove they were financially dependent, for example, by owning property together or sharing a bank account.
*
Carcieri argued that state law already allows residents to designate people to plan their funerals. He said the requirements in the bill meant to prove a relationship were too vague. "Finally,
this bill represents a disturbing trend over the past few years of the incremental erosion of the principles surrounding traditional marriage, which is not the preferred way to approach this issue," Carcieri wrote in a letter to lawmakers.

Ugandan Presidential Politics Behind "Kill Gays" Law?

David Mixner has a very interesting and intriguing post on his blog that has a different take on what may be ultimately behind the Uganda "kill the gays" legislation pending in the Ugandan Parliament. We it true, it would still fit hand in glove with the efforts of American anti-gay Christianists, including nutcase, Scott Lively. What it might be? The goal of keeping the current pro-Christian conservative president of Uganda in office. It would make a kind of sick sense. The Christianist allies of Republicans - who love to depict campaign opponents as possibly gay - in effect helping set the stage to discredit or criminalize a potential presidential opposition candidate. You see, President Museveni is worried about the return of Olara Otunnu to possibly head up the opposition in the next election. Olara Otunnu is is single and with no children, and we all know what that might mean! Indeed, it sounds like something Karl Rove would dream up. I will reserve judgment for now, but here are some highlights from David's post:
*
Could it be that the upcoming Ugandan presidential election is one of the main reasons behind the "kill the gays" legislation before the Ugandan Parliament? President Museveni must be very concerned about the return of renowned and honored statesman Olara Otunnu to possibly head up the opposition in the next election. Otunnu is single and with no children and the presidential allies have been spreading rumors about his private life far and wide. You can fill in the spaces.
*
Most importantly, Mr. Otunna (photograph) brings an astounding resume back to Uganda after a more or less self imposed exile from the country since 1986. Likely to be the nominee of the Uganda People's Congress, Otunna would be a bright light in a nation that increasingly is becoming a dark place including the anti-gay legislation. Rarely has a more distinguished person sought the presidency of Uganda. Oxford and Harvard educated, Otunna has been viewed as the conscience of his countrymen.
*
Clearly the return of this international human rights activist and hero has been perceived as a threat to President Musevenia and
recently the opposition leader was the victim of a highly suspicious traffic accident.
*
According to NewVision in Uganda, the Otunna escaped unhurt after his automobilie was hit by a jeep of the Presidential Guard Brigade.
The ruling party explained it as a simple accident while Otunna and his entourage have a different view.
*
Not only does the LGBT community have a stake in this next presidential election in Uganda but so do the children of the world, the people of Uganda and believers in the future of Africa
.
*
On her show tonight, Rachel Maddow interviewed a spokesman for the secret Christianist organization, The Family. Interestingly enough, he referenced "private" communications to have President Musevenia kill the anti-gay legislation. With many Ugandans whipped into a an anti-gay frenzy, could it perhaps be that the legislation can now be allowed die and Otunnu could still be damaged by the atmosphere deliberately manufactured to help Musevenia?

Christianists and GOP Mobilizing to Repeal Marriage Equality in New Hampshire

I truly have to wonder at times about what sick psychological disorders make the "protect marriage" crowd so obsessed with interfering with the civil rights of same sex couples. With the world's many problems and children dying of hunger and disease in various parts of the world literally every day, these folks can only focus on marginalizing same sex relationships. Now, with marriage equality just beginning to go into effect in New Hampshire, the gay-haters are mobilizing an effort to repeal same sex marriage in that state. Leading the charge is what I regard as an opportunistic GOP politician, David Bates, R-Windham (picture at right) who'd likely sell his mother if it played well with the wing nut GOP base. I am SO, SO over the legalized religious based discrimination desired by the GOP/Christianists. Once again, they are striving to make a mockery out of the right to freedom of religion allegedly promised by the U.S. Constitution. Here are some highlights from the Union Leader:
*
A state representative from Windham is leading an effort to bring a constitutional amendment on gay marriage to voters this fall. Republican Rep. David Bates, a gay marriage opponent, plans to discuss his work today in Concord to place the question before town meeting voters on March 9. "This grassroots effort has been preparing for months to launch the Let NH Vote' campaign," Bates said in an e-mail announcing his media event. He declined to discuss details when reached by phone yesterday.
*
The town clerk offices in Windham and Pelham confirmed they have received copies of citizen petitions to put a special article on this year's town meeting warrants.
*
A bill is coming to the Legislature this year to repeal the law, and a group of three Republicans has proposed a constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage.
CACR 28, sponsored by Dudley D. Dumaine, R-Auburn, proposes an amendment that says, "The State shall only recognize as marriage, whether in name or effect, the union of one man and one woman."
*
The good news is that New Hampshire requires a super majority vote to amend the state's constitution unlike California and Virginia where only 50.00001% is needed to take away the civil rights of minorities. As the Union Leader reports:
*
A constitutional amendment must be approved by a three-fifths, or 60 percent majority in the Legislature before it can go to voters in the fall. Then it must pass a popular vote by a two-thirds majority before it can become part of the Constitution.

Not Your Father's Republican Party

While the Christianists continue to work to totally take over the GOP, there seems to be some stray elements in the GOP that like to party like the gays. At least that what photos on the Facebook page linked to Andy Sere (pictured at left), the twink reported by AmeicaBlog to be running the National Republican Campaign Committee press outreach effort, would suggest. He apparently attended an event called the GOB Freedom Festival to celebrate "the freedom of Capt. Michael Quirke and all of our freedoms." From the photos on the event's Facebook page, it looks like the boys had a gay time. Andy notes that he's employed by the NRCC and that he attended Strake Jesuit College Preparatory '02. I'm not saying that Andy or his friends are gay, but he (1) attended Catholic high school and is likely Catholic and (2) is involved in the GOP and likes to party with hot, shirtless guys - could it be he's a closet case? I've known plenty of closeted Catholics and closeted Republicans such as Ed Schrock. John Aravsis summed it up as follows:
*
The National Republican Campaign Committee has a child running their press outreach, and apparently the GOP frat boy thinks it's funny to insinuate that Democrats are gay, simply based on innuendo (which is ironic, when you see his photo). You see, the NRCC spokesman informs us, repeatedly, that the candidate in question cares about "his body image." And we all know what it means when a guy cares about his body image.
*
It gets even odder when you look at the photos from the GOB "festival" that I found on Facebook. (The NRCC chap is listed on the GOB page guest list as having attended.) The photos are below. Now, I'm not going to comment on the body image of Mr. Seré's friends, but let's just say that Manhunt may get a run for their money.

Let me be clear, I'm not suggesting that the NRCC spokesman or any of his (international) male friends are gay. I'm simply admiring his soft boyish looks, his seeming obsession with homosexual innuendo and the male form, and his incredibly muscled, half-naked, Bel-Ami boy friends who like to get together for long hot weekends without the necessity of all that clothing covering their tight sweaty pecs.

Sad News

Yesterday I learned that the father of BlogActive.com and PageOneQ editor, Mike Rogers died over the holidays. I first got to know Mike in 2004 during the effort to out closeted GOP Congressman, Ed Schrock, who had the second most anti-gay voting record in Congress while he hypocritically advertised for gay trysts in the Hampton Roads area. I got to know Mike even better over the subsequent years and at the LGBT Blogger Summit he put together in December, 2008. I hope readers will keep Mike and his family in their thoughts and prayers as they go through this difficult time. Having lost my father in 2006, it is a rough experience regardless of one's relationship with the lost parent.
*
In other sad news, yesterday I also learned from fellow LGBT bloggers that Stephen Heersink, who authored a blog called Gayspecies died on December 29, 2009. Stephen and I did not always agree on issues and our relationship could turn nasty at times (a month or so ago he let me have it on his blog, and I returned the favor). But in his final message to me shortly after that encounter, he was supportive and endorsed my efforts to talk about coming out later in life and perhas give hope to others. Moreover, during some of my darkest times a year or two back, he always offered a sympathetic ear. As Wayne Dynes notes on his blog, Stephen was an defender of gay rights. In his last posting, he looked at the first gay marriage to achieve legal status in Latin America--in southern Argentina. Stephen, may you rest in peace.

Letter by 120 Clergy From 19 Denominations Supports Marriage Equality in New Jersey

Maggie Gallagher and her fellow bigots, who seek to write religious based discrimination into the laws of every state it would seem, generally put out the myth that all Christians oppose CIVIL marriage equality for same sex couples. Such is NOT the case in reality, although the lazy main stream news media generally rolls over and gives the Christianists a platform without offering opposing views from other clergy. Now, a letter signed by 120 members of the clergy from various denominations addressed to the New Jersey legislature reconfirms that Ms. Gallahger and her fellow gay-haters do NOT represent the views of all religious people. Pam's House Blend has a full copy of the letter that can be viewed here. I applaud the letter's signers and truly hope they and others like them will continue to make more noise and not allow Maggie Gallagher and similar Christo-fascists dominate the discussion. Here are some highlights from the letter:
*
We are 120 clergy members across New Jersey from 19 faiths and denominations. We are but a sample of New Jersey clergy who support marriage equality and wish to marry same-sex couples legally. We are Baptist, Buddhist, Episcopal, Ethical Culture Society, Interfaith, Jewish Conservative, Jewish Reconstructionist, Jewish Reform, Lutheran, Metropolitan Community Church, Methodist, Presbyterian, Reformed Church of America, Sankey Tribe, St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Unitarian Universalist, United Church of Christ and Unity Fellowship Church. Among us are members of the Religious Society of Friends, the Quakers, who do not have clergy.
*
We 120 clergy members ask you to put the marriage equality bill to a vote in your respective houses - without precondition - before the end of the current legislative session. In our nation founded on the separation of church and state, the State of New Jersey should not be in the business of telling faiths and clergy whom we can or cannot legally marry. We take issue with the State's current marriage law, which is not religiously neutral but reflects the beliefs of leaders of a particular faith community which opposes marriage equality.
*
As 120 clergy across New Jersey from 19 faiths and denominations, we urgently ask you to put the marriage equality bill to a vote in your respective houses - without precondition - before the end of the current legislative session.
The State must get out of our sanctuaries and uphold our religious freedom as clergy to marry whom we wish, or don't wish, under State law.
*
he names of the signatories of the letter can be found at PHB, as noted above. I am proud that there are a number of Lutheran clergy who signed the letter.

Washington Post Opposes Homophobe for Virginia Senate

Last November the totally unhinged Christianist, Ken Cuccinelli was elected attorney general of Virginia - a totally terrifying prospect - thus leaving his state senate seat open for a special election. The local GOP in Fairfax County has nominated an equally homophobic candidate, Stephen Hunt (pictured at left), a local school board member, to be Cuccinelli's successor. The Washington Post has come out with a strong endorsement of Hunt's Democrat opponent, Dave Marsden which, among other things looks at Hunt's anti-gay agenda and past abuse of his position to further homophobia in the public schools. Virginia truly does NOT need more nutcases in the General Assembly. Here are some highlights:
*
IN VIRGINIA, the two candidates running in a special election to fill the state Senate seat vacated by Attorney General-elect Ken Cuccinelli II, in western Fairfax County's District 37, offer voters a stark choice.
*
One of them, Dave W. Marsden, a Democrat, is a well-respected expert on incarceration, juvenile justice and rehabilitation, having run the Fairfax County Juvenile Detention Center for 17 years as well as the state's Department of Juvenile Justice, a position for which he was chosen by a Republican governor. Mr. Marsden has served two terms in the House of Delegates with distinction.
*
The other candidate, Stephen Hunt, a Republican, served a single term on the Fairfax County School Board; unusually for an incumbent, he failed to win reelection. Although he was hardworking, his tenure is remembered mainly for his being unanimously censured by his colleagues after he sent a letter to high school principals denouncing homosexuality as a "very destructive lifestyle" and urging them to expose students to former gays and lesbians who had rejected homosexuality.
*
Mr. Hunt's sin wasn't mouthing the usual platitudes of socially conservative orthodoxy; it's his consistently bad judgment. . . What Mr. Hunt offers is mainly cliches. Better to elect Mr. Marsden, who brings policy expertise, fiscal realism and sound judgment.

*
Again, Virginia already has too many members of the Christian Taliban holding public office. We do NOT need another one. I urge readers in the 37th District to make a point to get out and vote for Marsden.

Love and Support From Around the World

Recently, I have received some absolutely beautiful messages from readers that have been most supportive of me and thanking me for writing this blog. Today, I received such a message from a reader in the Loire Valley region of France. I responded to the author privately, but also wanted to say a public "thank you." Personally, I feel the thanks should go out to readers and not vice versa. I had been rather down emotionally this morning over financial issues, so the message was a wonderful gift that literal re-energized me.
*
Having passed the 150,000 visitor mark a short while ago, I am amazed (and thrilled) that people continue to find value/entertainment in what I write. All too often, it's the threatening/insulting messages from Christianists and hate filled homophobes that welcome me upon logging on to the computer in the morning. While such messages can be disconcerting, the fact that they hit a raw nerve with their authors means to me that perhaps I have hit upon the truth in voicing my opinions and views. In Virginia, James Dobson's minions at The Family Foundation even follow the blog and regularly get their panties in a wad.
*
Candidly, this blog has come to mean a great deal to me and it has allowed me to get to know individuals that I would otherwise never have connected with, both within the blogging community, gay rights organizations, and in the local LGBT community. There have even been days where not wanting to "fail my readers" in terms of surviving has helped hold me back from otherwise dangerous thoughts. Together with the boyfriend, friends and family members, this blog is often a lifeline for me. I want to again say "thank you" to all my loyal readers, including Tim in France.
*
While we joke about it, the boyfriend knows that his only real "rival" other than my children is the Internet and this blog. He says at times, he'd expect to find me convulsing on the floor if I was not able to log on for an extended period of time. I am addicted - that much I will confess. And he indulges me in this passion of mine.

Ten Do's and Don't's of Coming Out in a Law Firm

I have written a number of times about the rampant homophobia that still exists within much of the legal profession within the USA. Indeed, I am still waiting for responses from three of the four top Virginia law schools I wrote on the issue of their (non)enforcement of their non-discrimination policies which in theory bar homophobic law firms from recruiting on their campuses (only William & Mary has responded to date). Thus, I was surprised to find an article by James Quarmby (pictured at right), apparently a gay attorney himself with a large UK based law firm, in the legal journal, The Lawyer. Unfortunately, Mr. Quarmby - while acknowledging homophobia exists and trying to put some humor into the issue - in my opinion vastly under estimates the danger of coming out at many law firms in the USA. Indeed, I suspect that it is a dangerous move even today in the majority of law firms in most parts of the country. It surely is in the great Norfolk, Virginia area. While the American Bar Association is belatedly viewing LGBT attorneys as a minority group within the profession, the Virginia State Bar continues to pretend that LGBT attorneys do not exist. Here are some highlights from the article:
*
Homosexuals are the hidden minority. Don’t look round but the person sitting at the desk next to you may be one. Unlike other minorities we’re not immediately obvious (apart from a few flamboyant individuals I could mention). This means you won’t know unless you’re told.
*
This poses a dilemma for any gay person in a law firm. Do you come out and risk the hatred, ridicule or contempt of your colleagues and clients, or do you keep it under your hat? The latter course is superficially attractive but once you start deceiving people it’s difficult to know when to stop. And when you finally do speak up, you’re exposed not only as a nancy boy (or girl) but a fraud.
*
So, here are my 10 do’s and don’ts to coming out at work:
*
1. Do, if possible, choose your firm carefully before joining.
Some of the bigger firms have fancy equal opportunities and empowerment policies, normally a good indicator of the level of acceptance you can expect. Others - often the smaller regional firms - are still living in metaphorical caves with their animals. Expect them to have less enlightened attitudes.
*
2. Don’t make any grand gestures or announcements. Hanging a banner over your desk emblazoned with the words, ‘Yes, I’m gay, get over it’, probably isn’t the best move. Lawyers are conservative creatures by nature and are easily shocked by… well… anything really.
*
3. Do drop casual remarks into social conversations. These should leave no doubt which side you are batting for. “Oh, my boyfriend and I went to the theatre last night to see that play…” If said by a man, it leaves no room for misinterpretation.
*
4. Don’t make a big deal out if it. The less fuss you make about your newly declared sexuality, the less others will think it worthy of comment.
*
5. Do take your significant other to the firm’s Christmas party. You can be guaranteed that, within a few hours of arrival, the gossips will have done their work and that every last man, woman and child will know all the fabulous details. However, it’s probably best to avoid getting heroically drunk and snogging to the slow numbers on the dance floor. This may be a step too far.
*
6. Don’t feel the need to conform to any of the stereotypes. I have never felt the need, for instance, to express a love for musical theatre. And girls, it’s really not necessary to drive to work in a Jeep.
*
7. Do challenge homophobic behaviour when it arises. In my experience this is never normally overt and when it is, takes the form of carelessly inappropriate remarks or jokes. These need to be stamped on and crushed like a bug so that the offender is under no illusions that a repeat performance will be tolerated.
*
8. Don’t look for or expect homophobia where it doesn’t exist. We’re lucky to be in a profession that is generally well-educated, intelligent and tolerant. Most of your colleagues will want to be supportive if you come out. If they’re not then hit them over the head with a club. That last bit was a joke. Just.
*
9. Do remember to keep your sense of humour and have some fun. It’s not all deadly serious. In short - loosen up, for heaven’s sake.
*
10. Finally, for those who are ashamed or embarrassed about being ‘abnormal’, remember the words of the late Derek Jarman, who famously opined: “Heterosexuality isn’t normal, it’s just common.”

Database of Publicly Accused Priests in the United States

Given the Vatican's gross failure to discipline bishops and cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church who enabled and/or covered up the sexual abuse of minors by priests, the organization BishopAccountability.org has worked to pressure the Church to hold these clerics accountable. One continuing problem has been the refusal of many bishops to release the names of accused sexual abusers. To address this issue, BishopAccountability has compiled a data base of accused priest which can be found here and which reports on those convicted, often after the Church gave the abusers a free pass. The data base is described as follows:
*
According to the John Jay report commissioned by the U.S. bishops, allegations of sexual abuse were made in 1950-2002 against 4,392 priests. The number is generally believed to underestimate the problem. A few bishops have released the names of accused priests, but no official list exists of U.S. priests who have abused children and vulnerable adults. Below we present the most complete list currently available, culled from media reports and legal documents – with many photos, assignment records, and source articles. You may view and search the database by priest's name, by diocese, or by state.
*
A case in point out of the Diocese of Richmond, Virginia involved Fr. John E. Leonard - a BFF of former bishop Walter Sullivan. I am VERY familiar with the case because one of Leonard's accusers who refused to be silenced by the Church is a friend of mine. Ultimately, despite Bishop Sullivan's efforts to protect Leonard, Leonard was prosecuted, copped a plea deal, and was defrocked. Unfortunately, Bishop Sullivan went unpunished and was even rewarded by having the Catholic High School in Virginia Beach named after him. Sadly, this type of story is the norm in the USA as well as many other countries. As I have mentioned before, based on a study done by the Dallas Morning News back in 2002, TWO THIRDS of the bishops in the USA had enabled or covered up for sexual predators. Yet many Catholics continue to fawn over and ass kiss these less than godly bishops. It is sickening.

The American Inspired "Kill the Gays" Bill

The New York Times has an article that further connects the dots between the visit of three obsessive homophobes to Uganda last year and the movement to draft and pass a draconian bill to criminalize homosexuality in the Africa nation. As discussed before, one member of the trio is Scott Lively who is involved in identified anti-gay hate groups and the author of the utterly delusional "Pink Swastika." That anyone would use Lively as an "expert" on any topic, in my opinion, is as utterly insane as Lively himself. he other members of the homophobe trio are Caleb Lee Brundidge, a self-described former gay man who leads “healing seminars” and Don Schmierer, a board member of Exodus International - individuals that make a living selling the snake oil message that gays can change their sexual orientation despite the fact that no legitimate mental health or medical associations support that lie. Here are some story highlights:
*
KAMPALA, Uganda — Last March, three American evangelical Christians, whose teachings about “curing” homosexuals have been widely discredited in the United States, arrived here in Uganda’s capital to give a series of talks. The theme of the event, according to Stephen Langa, its Ugandan organizer, was “the gay agenda — that whole hidden and dark agenda” — and the threat homosexuals posed to Bible-based values and the traditional African family.
*
For three days, according to participants and audio recordings, thousands of Ugandans, including police officers, teachers and national politicians, listened raptly to the Americans, who were presented as experts on homosexuality. The visitors discussed how to make gay people straight, how gay men often sodomized teenage boys and how “the gay movement is an evil institution” whose goal is “to defeat the marriage-based society and replace it with a culture of sexual promiscuity.”
*
One month after the conference, a previously unknown Ugandan politician, who boasts of having evangelical friends in the American government, introduced
the Anti-Homosexuality Bill of 2009, which threatens to hang homosexuals, and, as a result, has put Uganda on a collision course with Western nations.
*
Donor countries, including the United States, are demanding that Uganda’s government drop the proposed law, saying it violates human rights, though Uganda’s minister of ethics and integrity (who previously tried to ban miniskirts) recently said, “Homosexuals can forget about human rights.”
*
Uganda seems to have become a far-flung front line in the American culture wars, with American groups on both sides, the Christian right and gay activists, pouring in support and money as they get involved in the broader debate over homosexuality in Africa.
*
[T]he Ugandan organizers of the conference admit helping draft the bill, and Mr. Lively has acknowledged meeting with Ugandan lawmakers to discuss it. He even wrote on his blog in March that someone had likened their campaign to “a nuclear bomb against the gay agenda in Uganda.”
*
During the Bush administration, American officials praised Uganda’s family-values policies and steered millions of dollars into abstinence programs. Uganda has also become a magnet for American evangelical groups. Some of the best known Christian personalities have recently passed through here, often bringing with them anti-homosexuality messages, including the Rev. Rick Warren, who visited in 2008 and has compared homosexuality to pedophilia. (Mr. Warren recently condemned the anti-homosexuality bill, seeking to correct what he called “lies and errors and false reports” that he played a role in it.)

*
Christian religious extremists are just as insidious as their Muslim counterparts. And like the Catholic Church and evangelical groups, they are seeking to market their hate and intolerance in backward and uneducated nations that are more susceptible of believing their lies. Groups like Lively's and Exodus need to be shut down and exposed for the frauds that they disseminate.

Is Something Happening in Iran?

As regular readers know, I have some time been following the ongoing developments in Iran and I candidly hope that the growing grass roots opposition will ultimately succeed and over throw the Islamic dictatorship currently ruling Iran. Given the nation's fabulous history, it truly deserves something better than the current crop of religious extremists at the helm of the nation. Obviously, if the Islamic dictatorship - which has been supporting Islamic extremists throughout the Middle East - is overthrown, a major realignment of power and political activism will unfold across the Middle East, including in neighboring Iraq and Afghanistan. While the USA seems to be doing nothing to support the opposition elements in Iran, one can only pray that these brave opponents to the current regime are successful in the long run. Here are some highlights from the Timesonline:
*
Iran’s panicking regime is once again seeking to suppress the Green Movement by decapitating it. Just as it did after June’s hotly-disputed presidential election, it is arresting high-profile reformists, academics and journalists who support the opposition. It hesitates to detain Mir Hossein Mousavi lest millions of his supporters take to the streets, but it has locked up his brother-in-law and is widely suspected of killing his nephew. It cannot arrest Shirin Ebadi, the Nobel laureate, as she is abroad, but it has imprisoned her sister.
*
The tactic will prove as futile now as it did in June. Decapitation will not work because the opposition is a bottom-up movement run not by Mr Mousavi or Mehdi Karroubi, its nominal leaders, but by its grassroots members. It is a massive campaign of civil disobedience.
*
Ahmadinejad, Khamenei and the Revolutionary Guards still don’t get it,” said one Iranian academic. “The Green Movement is a decentralised popular front run by local cells and local leaderships across the country. The main opposition figures do not control it. They are spiritual leaders, but do not provide any direction in regard to demonstrations or slogans.” . . . . Iranians are doing these things not because they are told to, but because they choose to. For a reviled regime that rules by diktat, that has to bus in supporters to fill its rallies, that must be a difficult concept to grasp.
*
Protests are now common not just in Tehran, but in conservative cities such as Mashad and Qom. The regime’s use of violence during the holy month of Muharram, its lack of respect for Grand Ayatollah Hussein Ali Montazeri after his recent death, and other sacriligious acts have eroded its support among the pious poor.
*
One activist said: “Do Khamenei, Ahmadinejad and the elite of the Revolutionary Guards really think that I, or anyone else, after being beaten by the police, witnessing the murder of Iranians on the streets, hearing stories of rape and murder in the prisons, and knowing of electoral cheating, will ever remain passive and quiet? None of us will ever accept the rule of Ahmadinejad and Khamenei after what they have done.”
*
God/Allah speed to the protesters and I hope they can bring down the dictatorship and install a democratic government by the own efforts - not those of an occupying power such as the USA is trying to do in Iraq.
