Cardinal Dolan Uses NYPD To Bar Gay Catholics From Sunday Mass

Remember how Cardinal Timothy "Porky Pig" Dolan disingenously said recently that the Catholic Church needed to do better outreach to gays and that his message to gays was "we love you."?   Well, yesterday Dolan showed what his kind of "love" looks like when he called on the New York Police Department to bar gays and their allies from Sunday mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral.  I have long felt that no gay person in their right mind can remain a Catholic and Dolan just helped underscore that truth.  What is wrong with gays who remain in a church that constantly denigrates them and strives to keep them less than full citizens?  Are they masochists?

The New Civil Rights Movement looks at yesterday's display of "love" for gays.  Here are highlights:

Cardinal Timothy Dolan today used the NYPD to prohibit from Sunday worship services gay Catholics and their allies by barring their entry into NYC’s historic St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the iconic home of the Roman Catholic Church in New York.

The small group of silent Catholic protestors were threatened with arrest by a New York City Police detective — unless they first washed their hands.

The ten Catholics, who are LGBT and not LGBT, and even parents of LGBT people, were responding to Cardinal Dolan’s April 25 blog post, “All Are Welcome!,” which tells gay people who wish to participate in the Catholic faith, you must first “wash your hands!” They labeled their actions today a “Dirty Hands Vigil.”

Joseph Amodeo, organizer of the action, writes at the Huffington Post.  .   .   .  .   that “the ten of us [who] gathered were greeted by four police cars, eight uniformed officers, a police captain, and a detective from the Police Commissioner’s LGBT liaison unit. The detective informed us that the Cathedral would prohibit us to enter because of our dirty hands.”
As we reached St. Patrick’s Cathedral, we were approached by Kevin Donohue, who identified himself as being in charge of operations for the cathedral. Sadly, Mr. Donohue’s tone was both cold and scolding. What astounded me most was when he said that we could enter the cathedral so long as we washed our hands first.
It was at this moment that Mr. Donohue advised us that if we entered St. Patrick’s Cathedral with dirty hands, we would be arrested and charged with criminal trespassing. Upon hearing those words, I remember standing there thinking, “How can I charged with criminal trespassing in my own home?” It was then that I realized what it meant to be spiritually homeless. This realization was particularly difficult for me in light of the private meeting that I had with Cardinal Dolan on November 27, 2012, at his office in Manhattan. It was during that meeting that he expressed such love and welcome that I find his subsequent “conditional welcome” to be difficult to understand.

In response to the Archdiocese’s threat of arrest, we opted to remain outside where we stood in silent vigil with our palms turned out facing toward the main doors of Cathedral.
Amodeo, .  .  .  .   who resigned last year from the board of NYC’s Catholic Charities, told The New Civil Rights Movement today via electronic message that the ”action on the part of the Archdiocese of New York stands in contrast to the radical welcome that Jesus Christ proclaimed throughout his ministry.” He added that it is “sad that the Cardinal is unable to extend the absolute welcome that forms the basis of Christian theology.”

In reality, Dolan has very dirty hands and is believed by some to have hidden millions of dollars of Church funds in the the Milwaukee archdioceses so that victims of sexual abuse by priests would go uncompensated.  The man is a nasty pig.

Archbishop Dolan Declares War on Gay Friendly Catholics

I'll admit it - I have nothing but contempt for the porcine Archbishop of New York (and the rest of the Catholic Church hierarchy, many of whom ought to be in prison over their malfeasance in over ups of sex abuse crimes). Rather than deal with the many huge problems in the Catholic Church - like ridding the Church of child rapist enablers and protectors - Porky Pig Dolan - who looks to have never missed a meal - has declared war on any Catholic who might believe that same sex couples deserve even a shred of legal recognition of their relationships. The irony, of course, is that Dolan's already too late in seeking to brow beat the laity, a significant portion of which has already shifted to support same sex marriage. Nonetheless, Dolan seems to think the laity is willing to accept Inquisition like fiats without question. Let's hope his heavy handedness serves to merely drive more Catholics away from the morally bankrupt Church. A piece in the California Catholic sets out the details of Dolan's anti-gay declaration. Here are some highlights:

[I]t is the policy of the Archdiocese of New York that:

(1) No member of the clergy (priest or deacon) incardinated in the Archdiocese of New York, or any person while acting as an employee of the Church, may participate in the civil solemnization or celebration of a same-sex marriage, which includes but is not limited to providing services, accommodations, advantages, facilities, good or privileges for such events. Ecclesiastical solemnization or celebration of same-sex marriages is expressly forbidden by Canon law.

(2) No Catholic facility or property, including but not limited to parishes, missions, chapels, meeting halls, Catholic educational, health, or charitable institutions or benevolent orders, or any place dedicated, consecrated, or used for Catholic worship may be used for the solemnization or consecration of same-sex marriages.

(3) No items dedicated, consecrated, or used for the celebration of Catholic liturgy or sacred worship, including but not limited to sacred vessels, vestments, liturgical books or other items may be used for the civil solemnization of a same-sex marriage.

(4) Failure to adhere to this policy may result in the imposition of canonical sanctions.

In the preamble to the decree, Dolan makes it clear that he's not just targeting the clergy with his treat of "canonical sanctions." He states as follows:

I hereby decree the following diocesan policy regarding same-sex civil marriages. This policy is to be followed by all persons whose activities are subject to my moral authority as Archbishop of New York. It is intended to provide instruction for the activities of these persons and for the use of the property and facilities of the Church and Catholic-affiliated entities within the canonical boundaries of this Archdiocese.

Frankly, I'd argue that Dolan and most of the Church hierarchy, including Benedict XVI have no moral authority. They threw that away years ago when the official Church policy was to hid abuse and put the interest of sexual predators ahead of the interest of children and youths.

Catholic School Principal Caught In Gay Tryst

Why anyone gay would remain in any kind of affiliation with any aspect of the Roman Catholic Church dumbfounds me. The institutional Church is corrupt, homophobic and the hierarchy is full of phony hypocrites from the Pope on down. It is like a Jew joining the Nazi Party in 1930's Germany. Yet, gays continue to act against their own best interests and remain affiliated with the Church, which in my view, can only serve to damage them emotionally and psychologically and possibly lead to foolish, self-destructive actions such as in this case. And what is with these idiots who engage in sex in public places or property other than their own? How stupid can one get? Here are highllights from WCBS-TV:
*
GREENBURGH, N.Y. (CBS) ― A Westchester County Catholic school principal is in serious trouble after he was arrested for allegedly going on a naked sexual romp with two other men in the backyard of a vacant home in the Orchard Hill section of town on Sunday. Gabriel De Jesus, 41, of Ossining told police he was the principal of Sacred Heart School for the Arts, a Catholic elementary school at 71 Sharpe Blvd. in Mount Vernon.
*
Authorities said DeJesus, Francesco Autera, 31, of Thornwood and another man met online. The trio allegedly picked the backyard of a vacant Abbeyville Lane home to conduct their group sex. An alert neighbor called 911 after noticing something suspicious.
*
Police found DeJesus and Autera naked and arrested both. They are charged with misdemeanor trespassing, public lewdness and disorderly conduct. The third man ran naked down the street before he could be apprehended, according to police. The New York Archdiocese said it is looking into the matter and plans to speak with police. Officials add that DeJesus has been a well-regarded educator up until this point.
