Santorum Heading to Winning BOTH Alabama and Mississippi?

Given the results of the PPP poll noted in a blog post yesterday, it is little surprise that Rick "Frothy Mix" Santorum seems poised to win the GOP primaries in both Alabama and Mississippi. Who but Santorum would look so appealing to evolution denying, interracial marriage ban loving, and Bible beating voters who surprisingly don't trip over their knuckles as they drag on the floor? Yes, this accusation is harsh, but as a former resident of Alabama some years ago, I truly cannot fathom WTF has happened to the state. It was more liberal under George Wallace in his latter years as governor than it is today. It is nothing less than frightening. No doubt the GOP establishment is freaking out. Andrew Sullivan summed it up this way:

There are some things even the 1 percent can't buy. Like the votes of the bottom 20 percent.

Meanwhile, the rational elements in the rest of America must be shaking their heads in dismay over the descent towards ignorance and religious based extremism that has overtaken the GOP. The Daily Beast looks further at Santorum's strong showing in these primaries. Here are highlights:

While Mitt Romney performed respectably on turf that was culturally foreign to him, the apparent failure to win is a huge setback for southerner Newt Gingrich, who will undoubtedly face louder calls to abandon the race and allow Santorum a clear shot at stopping the front-runner.

Assuming NBC’s projection in Alabama is on target, it’s a breakthrough moment for Santorum. The former senator with the ragtag operation has been the streaky candidate who falls just short of winning the big ones.

The outcome Tuesday further strengthens Santorum’s rationale that he is the only viable alternative to Romney, especially since he has been badly outspent by the Mitt machine in every matchup.

The race has turned increasingly caustic and personal, with Santorum saying the other day that Romney “very desperate for a man who supposedly has it in the bag,” and saying of Gingrich: “It would be great if he could get out of the race.”
