As a history major and one who not only loves geography but who has been lucky enough to do significant traveling overseas I am constantly dismayed by the idiocy and lack of knowledge of both geography and the rest of the world that plagues so many Americans. The phenomenon seems to be the worse amongst Christianists and their fellow Neanderthals in the GOP base. The map above, while in some ways a spoof, sadly probably only too accurate when it comes to this demographic of the U. S. population. A piece in Foreign Policy looks at the ignorance of Americans when it comes to geography - a 2006 survey revealed that only 40% of 18 to 24 year olds could locate Iraq and only 10% could locate Afghanistan. How can one cast an informed vote when you don't even know where countries the USA has invaded are located?
