Russia Says It Will Arrest Openly Gay Tourists

Russia is seemingly trying hard to force the International Olympic Committee to rethink holding the 2014 winter games in Russia.   Why else announce that "openly gay tourists" will be arrested?  Vladimir Putin must be indeed desperate to (i) distract Russians from the failure of his rule and (ii) kiss the ass of the Russian Orthodox Church hierarchy which has always backed dictators.  Travel and Escape has details.  Here are excerpts:

Thinking of taking a vacation to Europe this summer? If a trip to iconic city of Moscow or the edgier St. Petersburg is on your bucket list, an anti-gay law recently passed in Russia may have you thinking again. It is now outlawed to be ‘out and proud.’

In a throwback to the country’s authoritarian ruling, Russian president Vladimir Putin has signed a controversial law that punishes people for “homosexual propaganda.” The law fines people—including tourists—up to 200,000 rubles ($6,240 CDN) for “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations.” For Canadians—where same-sex marriage is legal—it is unfathomable that Russia’s laws permit the government to arrest and detain gay, or pro-gay, foreigners for up to 14 days before they would then be expelled from the country.

So what is considered pro-gay? Anything from gay-affirmative speech to hand-holding; even displaying a rainbow flag alongside a maple leaf on your backpack is illegal. Recently in southern Russia, there were complaints that Elton John’s stage outfits fell under “gay propaganda.” While LGBT are being told they are unwelcome in Russia, with such vague definitions, one wonders if anyone who even looks like they might be gay could also be fined or deported from the country.

According to Voice of Russia, any display of affection between same-sex couples could cause a “distorted understanding” that gay relations and heterosexual relations are socially equivalent, and risk spreading Western liberalism. Putin claims the law doesn’t discriminate against LGBT people, but rather—in an argument riddled with faulty logic—is there to “protect children from pedophilia.”

And how are these new laws going to impact tourism and the world’s spotlight on the upcoming 2014 Winter Games in Sochi? Will LGBT visitors—or anyone who embraces the gay community—want to visit the games? While Russia’s laws stigmatize and target the gay community, Brazil’s Ministry of Tourism is working to encourage the LGBT community to visit. Brazil, which is hosting the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, as well as the 2014 World Cup.

Fortunately, for LGBT travellers looking to take a vacation, there are other parts of the world more receptive to welcoming them with open arms—or at least not promising your vacation could wind up with jail time.
Russia is definitely on my "do not visit" list - even though I was a Russian history major in college.

Nigeria to Indict Dick Cheney, Interpol to Issue Arrest Warrant

While it would be far better if Dick Cheney - and Chimperator Bush - were facing indictment for war crimes, I'll settle for any threat of arrest if Cheney takes his sorry ass out of the USA. In my view, the man is pure evil and deserves to spend the rest of his life in jail. One can only dream of seeing Cheney in a Nigerian jail which somehow I suspect would not be up to the standards to which he's become accustomed. Related to this story on MSNBC last night, however, is news that the Liar-in-Chief has been involved in strong arming foreign governments and judicial systems to block prosecution of Bush White House operatives for international crimes such as torture. Once again, Obama proves that his entire campaign was a lie and that the American people were played as suckers as rarely before. I for one hope he's challenged for the 2012 nomination and defeated. I am way past done with the man. Business Week meanwhile has details on Emperor Palpatine Cheney's legal problems. Here are some highlights:
*
Nigeria will file charges against former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney and officials from five foreign companies including Halliburton Co. over a $180 million bribery scandal, a prosecutor at the anti-graft agency said.
*
Indictments will be lodged in a Nigerian court “in the next three days,” Godwin Obla, prosecuting counsel at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, said in an interview today at his office in Abuja, the capital. An arrest warrant for Cheney “will be issued and transmitted through Interpol,” the world’s biggest international police organization, he said.
*
Last week, Nigeria arrested at least 23 officials from companies including Halliburton, Saipem, Technip and a former subsidiary of Panalpina Welttransport Holding AG in connection with alleged illegal payments to Nigerian officials. Those detained were all freed on bail on Nov. 29.
*
Authorities in the West African nation are probing Halliburton, Saipem and Technip for the alleged payment of $180 million in bribes to win a $6 billion liquefied natural-gas contract. Panalpina is being investigated for illegal payments it allegedly made to Nigerian customs officials on behalf of Royal Dutch Shell Plc.
*
The plans to file charges against Cheney were reported earlier today in the Lagos-based Guardian newspaper. Femi Babafemi, a spokesman for the commission, confirmed the plans to file charges when contacted by phone today in Abuja. He wouldn’t comment any further.
*
KBR and Halliburton agreed to pay $579 million in February 2009 for bribery payments in Nigeria that stretched from 1994 to 2004.

Regent Law School Attorney Indicted for Real Estate Fraud

Former attorney and Regent Law School graduate, Troy A, Titus, has been arrested on a federal indictment, charging him with defrauding at least $1.5 million from former clients. One of Titus' tactics to gain clients' trust is reported as taking them to dinner, taking them to church and praying with them and talking up his religious faith. In my experience as an attorney, whenever an attorney talks about religion in the context of their legal representation of a client, the smart thing to do is run and watch your wallet as you flee. Here are some highlights from the Virginian Pilot:
*
The FBI on Tuesday arrested disbarred lawyer Troy A. Titus on a federal indictment, charging him with defrauding at least $1.5 million from former clients, including onetime R&B star Teddy Riley. Agents arrested Titus, 42, at his Chesapeake home about 7 a.m. following a lengthy investigation into his real estate dealings. Titus made a brief appearance that afternoon in U.S. District Court, where the 10-count indictment was unsealed.
*
The indictment says Titus solicited funds from clients for real estate projects by making false representations and promises as to where the money would be invested. In addition, according to the indictment, Titus used "funds obtained from one set of investors or other sources to make 'lulling' payments to other investors" in order to create a false impression that funds were invested properly and yielding profits. . . . Earlier this year, The Pilot reported that Titus faced at least a dozen lawsuits from former clients who claim he bilked them out of a total of between $2 million and $3 million.
*
Titus also is accused of preying on a widow. Doris Addenbrook and her husband, Robert, had been longtime Titus clients. When Robert Addenbrook died in 2001, "Titus began dining with Doris, taking her to church and praying with her, activities he had never previously engaged with Doris," the indictment says. "He told Doris that he wanted to ensure that she would have no further worries," the papers say.
