Publix's Self-Inflicted PR Disaster

Survey after survey has shown that a large majority of Americans support common sense changes to America's gun laws - even strong majorities of NRA members support universal background checks.  One lone force stands in the way of such much needed and publicly supported reforms: the NRA (which is a front for gun manufacturers) and politicians - mostly Republican - that the NRA has bought and paid for and who are willing to disregard the desires of the majority of voters.  Thus, it might not have been very wise for a grocery store chain to throw  campaign support to a vociferous NRA supporter for governor of Florida.  Yet some mental midget at Publix made that decision and a PR disaster rained down on the chain causing it to reverse course and disavow the former recipient of its monetary largess.   A piece in the Washington Post looks at this idiotic decision and its reversal.  Here are excerpts:
The supermarket chain Publix on Friday announced that it would suspend its political contributions to Adam Putnam, a Republican candidate for Florida governor, after being faced with overwhelming pressure to cut ties with him because of his fierce support for the National Rifle Association.
“We would never knowingly disappoint our customers or the communities we serve,’’ Publix said in a statement Friday. “As a result, we decided earlier this week to suspend corporate-funded political contributions as we reevaluate our giving processes.’’
The announcement came moments before “die-in” protests organized by 18-year-old gun-control activist David Hogg began at several Publix supermarkets, forcing store managers to reroute shoppers around the protesters, who lay on the floors of the aisles.
At two Publix supermarkets in Parkland, survivors of the February shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shouted “USA, not NRA!” as customers navigated their shopping carts around them on the floor, according to the Associated Press.
This most recent protest came one week after a mass shooting at Santa Fe High School in Southeast Texas killed 10 people, and on the same day that an Indianapolis middle school student opened fire in his classroom, injuring a student and a teacher.
The protesters were calling for an end to Publix’s support for Putnam, Florida’s agricultural commissioner, who has called himself a “proud NRA sellout.”
“A lot of people don’t support who Publix is supporting,” Haylee Shepherd, a 15-year-old sophomore at Stoneman Douglas, told the Associated Press. “It’s going to reflect on them as a brand and people shopping there.”
Publix has faced increasing backlash since the Tampa Bay Times reported that the company had given $670,000 to Putnam in the past three years. Another $147,000 was donated on top of that, including $78,000 from Carol Barnett, the daughter of Publix’s founder; $49,000 from former Publix executive M. Clayton Hollis Jr.; and $20,000 from Publix executive Hoyt Barnett, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
Industry experts disagree on how Publix will be impacted by the protests and the suspension of political contributions.
Phil Lempert, who heads the website Supermarket Guru, told the Orlando Sentinel that Publix’s recognition of the protesters’ demands was unusual. “But we live in unusual times, and when we look at gun violence, all the rules are being rewritten,” he said. “I think the impact will affect their bottom line in the very short term due to the protests, but canceling all political contributions is a very smart move.”
“Publix is a cult. Employees and customers are members,” Livingston said. “Publix will probably have a positive reaction. Everyone knows they are a standup company, especially after a hurricane.”
Livingston was referencing the outpouring of gratitude customers showed Publix during Hurricane Irma last summer. The grocery chain set up hurricane landing pages on its websites, responded to customers on social media . . .
Backing something opposed by a majority of customers is never a wise move.  It's one thing to ignore a boycott by NRA members - or Christofascist "family values" groups since they simply do not command the loyalty of significant numbers of people in comparison.  Indeed, most companies that have been targeted by Christofascist groups have seen improved bottom lines as large numbers of consumers decide to support them because they are ignoring the Christofascists demands.  Someone at Publix obviously had their head up their ass when they decided to make these ill-advised contributions.

Laura Ingraham Faces Backlash Over Attacks on Parkland Students

If one listens to the spokesmen and pundits of the far right, they would have you believe that they are the protectors of morality, decency and civic virtue even as they behave as little better than cyber bullies and support and occupant of the White House who boasts of sexual assaults, cavorts with porn stars and is utterly devoid of even a shred of basic morality.  The true ugliness of these people and the far right and Christofascists has revealed itself in many ways, not the least of which has been merciless attacks on the student activists from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, as previously noted on this blog.   Earlier this week, right wing nut, Laura Ingraham joined the list of attackers and singled out David Hogg for special bullying.  To his credit, Hogg hit back and called for advertisers to dump Ingraham's show.  Amazingly, advertisers began to do just that in a hopeful sign that the majority of Americans and the business world have decided they are down with the ugliness of Fox News and similar propaganda sites.  Now, as CBS News reports, Ingraham has suddenly announce a vacation as the much deserved shitstorm she started swirls around her.  Here are highlights:
Fox News' Laura Ingraham announced Friday she would be taking a vacation the next week to celebrate Easter with her family as advertisers have dropped her show after she criticized a Parkland school shooting survivor. Her supporters have launched the hashtag #IStandWithLaura.
In April 2017, embroiled in an advertiser boycott, Fox News' Bill O'Reilly announced he would be taking vacation for Easter. He was later fired by the network.
Eleven companies so far have withdrawn their ads from Ingraham's Fox News program after she feuded with a survivor of the Parkland, Florida, school shooting over Twitter. The Atlantis, Paradise Island resort; Office Depot, Jenny Craig, Hulu, Nutrish, TripAdvisor, Expedia, Wayfair, StitchFix, NestlĂ© and Johnson & Johnson said they would pull ads from the show.
Ingraham on Wednesday posted a mocking tweet of high school senior David Hogg, taunting him for not getting into some colleges he had applied to. In response, Hogg tweeted a list of advertisers on Ingraham's show and called on followers to contact them.
Nutrish was the first to say it would stop advertising on Ingraham's program, and other brands followed.
Ingraham apologized in a tweet the following day, citing "the spirit of Holy Week," and invited Hogg to appear on her show.  Hogg dismissed her statement. "She only apologized after we went after her advertisers," he told the New York Times. Ingraham has stayed silent since her tweet on Thursday.
It's unclear how much of an impact the advertiser exodus will have on Ingraham's program. The 11 who have left are a small portion of the 129 companies that have run ads on her program in the last 10 days, reports Media Matters,  . . . . . On Thursday night, Ingraham's show ran a "filler" ad, indicating it could be having trouble selling.
Remember, if you want to see true moral decency, you will NOT find it on Fox News or in the pews of evangelical Christian churches.

UVA Joins Colleges Agreeing to Disregard Suspensions for Participating in Anti-Gun Protests

In the wake of the horrific mass shooting on February 14, 2018, many high school students are planning to participate in anti-gun protests, especially on March 24, 2018 when nationwide protests are scheduled.  A number of school superintendents - typically in backward, GOP dominated/knuckle dragging areas of of America (the two generally go together) - have threatened to suspend students who miss school in order to participate in such protests.  In an effort to counter such efforts to stifle free speech and freedom of assembly, a number of prominent colleges and universities have announced that suspension arising from participation in anti-gun protests will not be counted against student applicants.  Among such universities I am proud to say is my alma mater, the University of Virginia which found itself invaded by non-Virginian Neo-Nazis last August.  Here are highlights from BuzzFeed:

In the Needville Independent School District just outside Houston, Texas, the superintendent reportedly sent out letters threatening three-day suspensions for any student who joins in on walkouts.
"Life is all about choices and every choice has a consequence whether it be positive or negative," Superintendent Curtis Rhodes said. "We will discipline no matter if it is 1, 50, or 500 students involved. All will be suspended for three days and parent notes will not alleviate the discipline."
The Spring Independent School District, also in the Houston area, and the Waukesha County School District in Wisconsin issued similar warnings. (The Waukesha superintendent later made another statement saying students could participate if they were excused from class by their parents.)
Now colleges are standing up for the teenage activists, saying it won't affect their admissions decisions if they get suspended for protesting.
Here are just a few of the schools that have vowed not to penalize student protesters:
Yale UniversityMIT
Boston University
University of Virginia
Tulane University
Dartmouth College
George Washington University
UMass Amherst
Brown University
Northeastern University
University of Connecticut
Clark University
Smith College
UCLA
Brandeis University

For more schools that have made this pledge, growing lists are available here and here.

Noticeably missing from the lists of such universities are Christofascist institutions such as Regent University and the even more insane Liberty University whose degrees and graduates are frequently viewed with suspicion by those who graduated from legitimate colleges and universities.

The University of Virginia Statement reads as follows:

Kudos to my alma mater!
