Yet another new wingnut organization has sprung up - the Christianists set up such organizations almost as a cottage industry to increase ways to (a) spread dishonest propaganda and (b) pull in money from the uninformed and those with lemming like mentalities. Of course, often a not too intensive investigation reveals that these "new" organization are just newly devised affiliates of long standing Christianist groups. The new organization is National Organization for Marriage. Its director is Brian S. Brown, a former executive director of the Family Institute of Connecticut, one of the affiliates of Daddy Dobson's larger hate machine, Focus on the Family. Initially, Brown plans to target 11 Massachusetts lawmakers who switched votes to oppose the proposed state constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.
Currently, as Pam's House Blend reports (http://www.pamshouseblend.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=3204), there are thirty four (34) states with Focus on the Family "state policy councils," according to Frederick Clarkson: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin. In Virginia, the organization is called "The Family Foundation," which moves in lock step with Daddy Dobson proclamations.
It's clear that anti-gay money is going to get funneled to these state organizations and other affiliates to try to topple any elected officials in close districts that don't get "in line" with the fundie program. Thus, in Virginia, it is a sure bet that anyone who gets The Family Foundation's endorsement is (1) no friend to the LGBT community and (b) no proponent of freedom of religion for all citizens.
