Shameless Pandering

New York Magazine has an interesting story that conjectures that Hillary's shameless pandering to voters on the gasoline tax holiday may have been part of her undoing in Indiana. Hillary has consistently demonstrated that she will say and do anything to further her megalomaniac quest for power. It is one reason I cannot stand her - one needs to have some basic level of principle in my view besides "it's all about me" and "I want this, so I should have it." Perhaps even less sophisticated voters who are not daily news and political junkies saw through Hillary this time. I again have to wonder what precisely Hillary has gotten from her vastly expensive consultants - other than bad advice. Here are some story highlights:
*
It’s easy to see why Clinton was tempted to hop aboard the Pander Express, once John McCain floated the idea of suspending the federal gas tax of 18.4 cents a gallon for the summer. Giving some badly needed relief to truckers, farmers, and vacationers fit right in with the hash-slinger-in-a–Wal Mart–pantsuit image Hillary honed in Ohio, perfected in Pennsylvania, and was deploying all over Indiana. And when Obama derided the idea by saying it would only save consumers “pennies,” he seemed to be handing the Clintons one more opportunity to portray him as an out-of-touch elitist.
*
But as things turned out, when Hillary called for suspending the gas tax, she threw Obama the kind of rope he desperately had been seeking to pull himself out of the Wright train wreck. Wright screwed Obama as hard as any noncandidate has ever screwed an American presidential contender. And even after counterattacking and distancing himself from his former pastor, Obama was noticeably off his game. But the gas tax became a rare instance where Clinton and Obama directly and diametrically opposed each other on a policy issue, automatically generating headlines and coverage that helped push Wright out of the local news in Indiana.
*
Further, the gas tax turned the national media against Hillary over the weekend, because the Clinton campaign hadn’t bothered to line up (or just couldn’t find) a single expert to support suspending the tax. That left Clinton herself and surrogates like Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) insulting economists on national television, which looked ridiculous. It also left the media free to report the story without trying to be evenhanded and essentially to tell viewers that suspending the tax is a stupid idea.
*
Most importantly, the new debate let Obama rediscover his voice. . . . And he took full advantage. Six days ago, Obama introduced the single most
brilliant ad of the Indiana campaign, called “Truth.” And, palpably relieved at the partial change of subject, he incorporated a detailed denunciation of the gas-tax suspension into his stump speech, in which he hit full stride again on Monday night.

A Closet Case in My Old Neighborhood

Back in July, 2004, I did a post on a New York Magazine article that focused on the use of Craigslist by married men in New York City for sexual hook-ups with other married men (http://michael-in-norfolk.blogspot.com/2007/07/married-man-seeks-same-for-discreet.html). Per the article, some cheated on their wives regularly and over a long period of time. Shortly thereafter, I found that this blog had been quoted in follow up comments to that article (http://nymag.com/nymag/letters/35548/). In any event, since then from time to time I check out the local Craigslist to see if similar situations occur in this area. The answer is, oh my, yes, indeed. There are lots of married guys looking to cheat on their wives, many looking for young Navy guys to satisfy their needs. Imagine my surprise, however, when I randomly came across this ad today from someone in my former outwardly straight laced, church going, Republican, neighborhood, Baycliff, in Virginia Beach:
baycliff bi guy - 40
Date: 2008-03-28, 12:20PM EDT
would love to find a bi neighbor in the baycliff subdivision to meet and have some discreet, safe, m2m fun occasionally. Very sane, safe, d/d free guy here. Just like to get with a guy occasionally and would prefer someone in my neighborhood or close by. white guys only, please. I do have a pic. 5'10", 190, clean-shaven face, professional, clean-cut type guy here. Hope to hear from someone.
Believe me, I am not a prude, but I definitely believe in honesty. I had my life changing slip up and came clean to my wife. Not until after we formally separated and I moved out of the house would I have ever thought of seeking out meetings like this guy is doing. Especially in my own neighborhood!!

Married Man Seeks Same for Discreet Play - Follow Up

I was somewhat surprised to learn via an e-mail from Suzy Soro, a comedienne in Hollywood, that my blog (with a live link) was referenced in the August 13, 2007, Comments section of New York Magazine (http://nymag.com/nymag/letters/35548/):

1. Sometimes it’s the magazine that inspires the outrage of readers, and sometimes it’s the people we write about. This week, we saw equal amounts of both. The major source of reader agitation was “William,” the secretly gay man profiled by David Amsden (“Married Man Seeks Same for Discreet Play,” July 30). “I am the older, and hopefully wiser, sister of your wife; not by birth, but by experience,” wrote Patti H. of Oceanside, California. “Unlike you, however, [my ex-husband] had the courage to be honest with me before he chose to become sexually involved with a man.” Detractors came from both sides of the aisle. “For the record, I never ran around like this on my wife while living with her,” went a post on the blog Coming Out in Mid-Life in Red America. “I find this behavior dishonorable.” The magazine was also chided for presenting William’s situation as novel. “This isn’t a new discovery on Amsden’s part,” wrote Funky Brown Chick. “Didn’t E. Lynn Harris establish his entire writing career, in part, by crafting books about life ‘on the down low?’”
Am I famous or infamous??
