The "Hate the Sin, Love the Sinner" Lie

A comment was left on this blog - which I did not publish - spewing out the old lie that Christians "hate the sin" of homosexuality but "love the sinner" - i.e., us homosexuals. Excuse me, but in my view, that line is unadulterated bullshit. Perhaps homophobes find comfort in telling themselves this old lie rather than look in the mirror and focus on the fruits of the hate they try to ignore beneath their actions. Every week one encounters stories of gays beaten to death, fired from their jobs, homes vandalized, depicted as child molesters, and otherwise insulted by all types of vile lies knowingly disseminated by "men of God" and/or the professional Christian groups. The list of misdeeds against gays is virtually endless and it is always the Christians, Mormons or Catholic hierarchy spreading the lies. Meanwhile, the news media is devoid of any stories of purportedly persecuted Christians faring such treatment. Again, "hate the sin, love the sinner" is a disingenuous lie and serves no purpose other than to throw up a smoke screen to hide hate and bigotry.

Inflammatory statements that gays are "threatening marriage," cannot be proper parents, or even threaten western civilization are no acts of love and they create an atmosphere where gays have to leave in fear that some nutcase will feel empowered to inflict physical harm or other violence - all because the acts of Christians and men and women of faith. That's not love. That's hate no matter how one tries to dress it up otherwise. My advice to the author of the comment? Take a good look at yourself in the mirror, think of the harm you and others do, and stop repeating that tired old lie.
