For readers of Mary Renault's THE LAST OF THE WINE, this splendid man is an apt stand-in for the character of the noble Lysis. All gay men might do well to read this novel.
Hard-working M in N: You do a great service to many of us. Thank you. And what a pleasure to find another reader of M.R. She is not only a magnificent deployer of prose, she also sets the ethical bar VERY high for us gay men.
Have you ever read her stunning WWII novel, THE CHARIOTEER? I actually taught it for one year to juniors at Cranbrook School here in Mich. I had to give it up, NOT because it was gay-themed, but because the writing was over students' heads. Imagine.

Yes, I have read THE CHARIOTEER and enjoyed it. Of all her books, The Last of the Wine, Fire From Heaven and the Persian Boy are my favorites.
