Supreme Court Stops Parts Of Texas Abortion Law

I note in an earlier post how the Christofascists lost the war against same sex marriage because the only real argument for their opposition in the final analysis was religious belief.   The same underlying reason lies behind the Christofascists' opposition to both abortion and contraception.  That's not to say the Christofascists will not try to raise a smoke screen to hide their real agenda.  A case in point here in Virginia is the ruse that abortion clinics should meet hospital like requirements.  Never mind that countless other out patient procedures that are more dangerous to a patient's are not subjected to such requirements (e.g., colonoscopies are more dangerous than abortions, but in Virginia abortion clinics must meet far higher (and costly) requirements. Today, the U.S. Supreme Court strike down parts of the Texas law that sought to shutdown almost all abortion clinics in that state.  Perhaps the Christofascists and their GOP political whores have pushed their religious agenda too far.  Here are highlights from Huffington Post:
The Supreme Court has blocked Texas from enforcing key parts of a 2013 law that would close all but eight of the state's abortion facilities.

The justices largely granted the request of abortion providers Tuesday. With three dissenting votes, the court suspended a ruling by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that allowed Texas to enforce a rule making abortion clinics statewide spend millions of dollars on hospital-level upgrades.

The appeals court's ruling suspended an August decision by U.S. District Judge Lee Yeakel, who found that such upgrades were less about safety than making access to abortion difficult.

Yeakel's ruling stopped the requirements, so the state appealed. The 5th Circuit is still considering the overall constitutionality of the measure but allowed it to go into effect.

Based on the Texas law, Virginia's law could likewise be subject to being stricken down.
