More Hate and Bathshitery From Christianist Crazies

Yesterday two posts looked at the bizarre alternate universe world view of Michele Bachmann. As crazy as Bachmann may be, she is hardly alone when it comes to acting as a merchant of hate and contempt against other Americans a- or in her rejection of scientific knowledge. On the issue of gays, Bachmann's anti-gay views are right up there with those of Linda Harvey, head of the SPLC registered hate groups Mission America. Harvey's latest spewing of anti-gay malice was captured by Right Wing Watch and involves Harvey's desire to see LGBT citizens driven from the ranks of the nation's teachers. Here's some of Harvey's bullshit:

Mission America’s Linda Harvey launched into another anti-gay tirade on her radio show on Friday, criticizing the National Education Association for supporting the rights of gays and lesbians to become teachers. Harvey, who once claimed that the NEA was using scholarships to make kids gays, on the other hand contends that schools should ban gay and lesbian teachers until they “leave that behavior behind.”

Harvey: Kids should not be put in the confusing position of having a teacher they like and respect in many ways who’s also known to be practicing homosexual behavior. Of course that’s where many of our children in public schools today find themselves because the National Education Association not only allows but applauds and defends openly homosexuality and even transvestite teachers…. The fact is that no homosexuality should be in our schools, period. When people leave that behavior behind, then they might be qualified for a job involving children. Out and proud homosexuals should not have jobs that involve children. I know that’s not the current policy in many schools but it should be.

I cannot help but wonder how one gets so utterly full of contempt and malice for other people - especially LGBT Americans. This past weekend hundreds of conservative lawmakers and lobbyists gathered in New Orleans for the so-called American Legislative Exchange Council’s ("ALEC") annual meeting. As Think Progress reports, the gathering turned into another gay bashing event with SPLC registered hate group, Family Research Council, disseminating anti-gay literature. Here are some highlights:

The corporate front group is so concerned with secrecy that it instructed hotel security guards to physically attack two ThinkProgress journalists covering the event.

However, it wasn’t just conservative legislation that was being passed around during ALEC’s meeting. Among the materials handed out to every attendee were anti-LGBT pamphlets from the Family Research Council, including the “Top Ten Myths About Homosexuality” and the “Top Ten Harms Of Same-Sex ‘Marriage’”.

The supposed myths included “people are born gay,” “sexual orientation can never change,” “homosexual conduct is not harmful to one’s physical health,” and “homosexuals are no more likely to molest children than heterosexuals.” In its second pamphlet, the FRC told conference-goers that expanding marriage to include same-sex couples will somehow mean “fewer people would marry,” “fewer people would remain monogamous,” and polygamy will soon result.
