In the lead up to last November's elections in Virginia, I warned people as to just how crazy Ken "Cooch" Cuccinelli is if one has followed his career in the Virginia General Assembly. Moreover, he provides a wonderful window into the mindset of his backers at The Family Foundation and similar far right entities in Virginia. Having just a little over a week ago set a firestorm by his attack on gay anti-discrimination policies, Cooch has now been exposed as a birther nut case forcing Bob McDonnell to yet again distance himself from his deranged Attorney General. Not having learned that video tapes can resurface at the must inopportune times, Cuccinelli has even disingenously denied his prior statements to rabid birther and teabagger supporters. Just barely in the second month of his term, one can only wonder what additional debacles will be forthcoming. I truly hope that apathetic voters who sat out the election are waking up to the consequences of such action. Meanwhile, many of us hope that Cuccinelli will single handedly destroy the credibility of the Republican Party of Virginia which nominated him. The audio in question was released today by Ben Tribbett, a Virginian political blogger who is often credited with breaking the George Allen “macaca” video. The blogger uploaded the video onto YouTube with a still image of Cuccinelli as a visual.

I spoke to Tribbett, a former colleague, on the phone about the story. In order to protect his source he wouldn’t tell me where and when the audio takes place, or when he first learned of it; he would only say that it took place “at an event Ken was at.”

“I think it shows a shocking lack of judgment for an Attorney General to be having this kind of blunt conversation with a conspiracy theorist,” Tribbett said. “I think his lawsuit against the EPA, his letter on anti-discrimination policies and this audio shows that he is turning the Attorney General’s office into a circus freak show.”

I suspect that Bob McDonnell's office had a fit on hearing this latest disaster and as Politico reports, McDonnell quickly acted to distance himself from Cuccinelli:

Virginia GOP Gov. Bob McDonnell tried to make clear Monday that he does not agree with a suggestion by close ally, state Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, that President Barack Obama was not born in United States.

Cuccinelli also distanced himself from his earlier words Monday, saying he was speaking hypothetically.

Asked by POLITICO for a response to Cuccinelli’s comments, McDonnell’s spokeswoman Stacy Johnson originally said that “All questions should be directed to the Office of the Attorney General.” Pressed on the close tie the two politicians have shared, Johnson responded: “The President was born in the United States. This is a non-issue and we will have no further comment.”

Huffington Post also has coverage on Cuccinelli's effort to save face. Having listened to the audio, Cooch's claim that he was speaking theoretically doesn't seem very plausible to me. He's a Kool-Aid drinker plain and simple and the Virginia GOP is going to have to live with its mistake in nominating Cuccinelli in the first palce.
