Public Policy Polling’s most recent survey of Virginia’s electorate has yielded results that must have the Christofascists at The Family Foundation lapsing into convulsions and spewing showers of spittle. The horror!! Victoria Cobb must have wet herself on hearing the news: 59% of the Virginians surveyed said that they would accept civil unions for same sex couples even though a majority (i.e., 53% still oppose same sex marriage). Here are highlights from the Sun-Gazette:
A majority of Virginia voters continue to oppose the idea of same-sex marriage, but are open to civil unions, according to a new survey.
Public Policy Polling’s most recent survey of Virginia’s electorate found that 53 percent of those questioned opposed legalization of same-sex marriage, while 34 percent supported it.
But 59 percent of respondents said they would be willing to accept civil unions for gay couples. Democrats (70 percent) and independents (66 percent) were more likely than Republicans (39 percent) to be in favor.
Among other questions asked in the most recent survey:
* When asked “If there was an election for Congress today, would you vote Democratic or Republican?” the response was 45 percent Democratic, 42 percent Republican and 14 percent not sure.
* When asked “Do you support or oppose the goals of the Tea Party movement?” 35 percent said they supported it, 47 percent said they opposed it an 19 percent were not sure.
Virginia still has a very long way to go before it enters into the 21st century, but the poll results suggests that just maybe folks are waking up to the toxic lies and prejudice which are the main stock in trade of bothThe Family Foundation and the Republican Party of Virginia.
