I have been a frequent critic of Glenn Nye on a number of his votes in Congress. However, Nye has gotten it right - at least in part - and has signed on as a co-sponsor of H.R. 3017: Employment Non-Discrimination Act of 2009 ("ENDA"). One of the profound negatives of living in Virginia is the total lack of employment non-discrimination protections for LGBT citizens. ENDA, while not perfect, would apply to employees with more than 15 employees and would have protected me had it been in effect when I was forced from a local law firm in 2004 for being gay. In an e-mail to another constituent in his district, Congressman Nye said in relevant part as follows:
*
The Employee Non-Discrimination Act was reintroduced June 19, 2009 by my colleague, Representative Barney Frank. You will be pleased to know I am a cosponsor of this legislation.
*
The bill prohibits employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. It also prohibits employers to limit, segregate, or classify employees or applicants in any way that would deprive any individual of employment based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.
*
H.R. 3017 is currently being debated in the House Education and Labor, Administration, Oversight and Government Reform, and Judiciary Committees. As Congress considers this and future related legislation, I will continue to stand up against wrongful discrimination.

Hopefully, Nye will next voice support for the repeal of DADT and give progressive a reason to come out and vote to re-elect him in November.
