Quote of the Day: Andrew Sullivan on Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum

Andrew Sullivan nicely sums up the disconnect between supposed religious beliefs and actions/policies advocated by Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum. In truth, the criticism applies equally to Romney and to Ron Paul. The hypocrisy and actual moral bankruptcy extends, of course, far beyond these men to the Christian extremists who are supporting them and make up much of the GOP base as well:

We hear constantly about the evils of contraception and gays and an alleged "war on religion" from the two Catholic presidential candidates. And yet both of them support torture of terror suspects; and both were ardent supporters of the Iraq war and want to deepen the one in Afghanistan as well as launch a pre-emptive strike on Iran. Both support the death penalty.

Time and time again we see the Bible picked over to selectively find passages that support a certain form of bigotry. The larger Gospel message of Christ is utterly and completely ignored. Christianity has become something ugly indeed.
