Bob McDonnell Endorses Cuccinelli Want to Be Scott Rigell

Bob McDonnell, a/k/a "Taliban Bob," a/k/a Pat Robertson's Manchurian candidate, has endorsed Christian right auto dealer Scott Rigell for the GOP slot to challenge 2nd District Congressman Glenn Nye. The endorsement is not surprising since both McDonnell and Rigell have long ties to the Pat Robertson wing of the Republican Party of Virginia. To date Rigell is running a clone of McDonnell's own "moderate" campaign and staying away from his extreme religious and social views. As I previously reported, Rigell is NOT what he is trying to seem and Virginians need to wake up to the fact that we do not need another Christianist ayatollah in elected office. While perhaps not literally as insane as Kookinelli, Rigell definitely would like to see Virginia taken back to the 1950's on social issues, if not even decades earlier. With Barack Obama and Congressional Democrats failing to deliver on campaign promises other than in highly watered down form - if at all - Nye is likely to have a very unenthusiastic party base behind him. It seems the Democrats have learned nothing from the November 2009 debacle in Virginia. Here are highlights from the Virginian Pilot:
*
Gov. Bob McDonnell, the leader of the state’s Republican Party, is publicly taking sides today in the party’s 2nd Congressional District primary by endorsing a longtime friend and campaign contributor, Scott Rigell, over five other GOP contenders.
*
Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling also is expected to participate in the announcement, scheduled for 4 p.m. in the Norfolk Waterside Marriott Hotel.
*
The June 8 primary will choose a party nominee to challenge U.S. Rep. Glenn Nye, a Democrat, in the November election. The district includes all of Virginia Beach and the Eastern Shore and parts of Norfolk and Hampton.
*
The endorsement demonstrates the pull that Rigell has enjoyed in the contest, including support from high-ranking Virginia Republicans such as U.S. Rep. Eric Cantor, the House minority whip, and the largest campaign fund, fueled largely by his own contributions.
*
Rigell, who made a personal fortune in auto sales, has been a longtime contributor to Republican campaigns and strongly backed McDonnell’s political rise.

During McDonnell’s successful campaigns for the House of Delegates, attorney general and last year’s gubernatorial election, Rigell, his wife and his businesses contributed a total of $134,000, according to campaign records compiled by the Virginia Public Access Project.
