I've often noted that I have a hard time understanding how any LGBT individual can be a Republican. Yes, once upon a time the party stood for fiscal responsibility, but those days are long gone and the GOP - the Bush tax cuts in particular - is largely responsible for today's economic mess. So with that supposed excuse for GOP allegiance gone, how does one remain in a party that holds contempt for one's equality? A new ABC News report shows that standing for LGBT equality is one of the most poisonous things a would be GOP candidate can espouse. Only martial infidelity ranks up with anti-gay equality. Thus, one is left with a feeling that LGBT Republicans must be suffering from denial syndrome like the closeted homophobes referenced in the prior post. Here are highlights from the ABC News story:
*
Mitt Romney's religion is far less of a concern to potential Republican voters than it once was, and a candidate's race or sex are non-issues for vast majorities. But if a GOP contender supports gay civil unions -- or has committed marital infidelity -- all bets are off.
*
[I]n the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll . . . 50 percent [of Republicans] would be less apt to support a candidate who favors civil unions for gay couples.
*
More than seven in 10 who say they're very conservative also are less likely to vote for a candidate who supports gay civil unions, as are six in 10 evangelical white Protestants, another core Republican group.
*
The negative impact of a candidate's support for gay civil unions issue increases with age, peaking at 66 percent among seniors.
