Homophobes Likely To Be Closet Gays

UPDATED: Now CBS News has jumped on the bandwagon. I cannot help but love the coverage. One can only hope that the loud homophobes find themselves increasingly challenged - and questioned about their own psychological problems.

I wrote last week about the new study that suggests that those who are most homophobic are actually acting out of attempts to suppress or deny their own same sex attractions. Since then, coverage of the study seems to have exploded across the Internet and news media. Frankly, it's surprising that the anti-gay professional Christian set isn't trying to attack the study - perhaps they are hoping that if they hunker down, the storm will pass over. I on the other hand hope that it does not. To give an idea of the widespread coverage, the title of this post comes from the International Business Times. The headline "Homophobic people likely to be repressing same-sex attraction" comes from the New York Daily News, which has a sub-title of "Often develop anti-gay attitudes after fighting their own desires." Thankfully, there are many. many more such headlines. Here's a snippet from the International Business Times:

The researchers said it may not be just a coincidence that several vehemently homophobic public figures are often caught engaging in homosexual acts. They cited examples of Ted Haggard, the evangelical preacher who opposed gay marriage but was exposed in a gay sex scandal in 2006 and Glenn Murphy, Jr., the former chairman of the Young Republican National Federation and vocal opponent of gay marriage, who was accused of sexually assaulting a 22-year-old man in 2007.

In an earlier study, conducted by the Department of Psychology, University of Georgia in 1996, it was found that homophobia is associated with homosexual arousal that the homophobic individual is either unaware of or denies.

Me thinks that Rick Santorum and other anti-gay extremists in the GOP as well as Richard Land of the Southern Baptist Convention and similar Christianists might want to tone down their rants.
