Marriage "Defenders" Attack Obama and Seek to Reinforce Lies and Anti-Gay Stigma

Friday members of the Congressional GOP engaged in their version of cross burning in terms of LGBT Americans and allowed a parade of bigotry during the hearings held by the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on the Constitution. Among those testifying was the whore like, self-enriching Maggie Gallagher who most appropriately was awarded the First Annual "Anita Bryant Unparalleled Bigotry" Award by GetEqual. True to form Gallagher was trotting out the same tired lies and false information while seeking to trash the right to freedom of religion for anyone not subscribing to the Christianist and child rapist enabling Vatican views on civil law marriage. The Wonk Room describes the hearings as follows:
*
This morning’s “defending marriage” hearing held by the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on the Constitution invited anti-LGBT witnesses Maggie Gallagher of the National Organization for Marriage and Edward Whelan of the Ethics and Public Policy Center to reinforce stigma against gays and lesbians. Committee Chairman Lamar Smith (R-TX) and subcommittee Chairman Trent Franks (R-AZ) also used the hearing to attack the White House.
*
Fortunately, there were some who testified in defense of LGBT parenting and civil rights. These included Professor Carlos Ball of Rutgers School of Law, and Congressman Nadler (D-NY), Congressman Conyers (D-MI), Congressman Bobby Scott from my area of Virginia, and Congressman Quigley (D-IL)all of whom challenged Gallagher and Whelan on their claims. Here's a sampling of Gallagher's bullshit testimony:
*
Gallagher repeatedly stated that children do better with a mother and a father, despite ample evidence that children of same-sex parents fair just as well, if not better:
*
GALLAGHER: If, in fact, marriage, as a public and legal institution…is oriented towards protecting children by increasing the likelihood they have a mother and father, then same-sex couples do not fit, and conversely, if same-sex couples fit the definition of marriage, then marriage really is no longer about responsible procreation in the sense.
*
Personally, I believe that if there is a God, Gallagher has a special reserved seat in Hell - along with John Paul II, Benedict XVI, Tony Perkins and a host of similar hate-filled, self-congratulatory "godly Christians."

My gay friends who are married have stayed together longer than most heterosexual couples I know, me and my ex husband included. I think it may be because they choose to marry for reasons other than sexual compatibility or loneliness or possibly the worst one, because it's expected. Could it be that marriage is actually more meaningful for gay couples? I don't know, I'm just speculating. What I do know is that Maggie Gallagher and her ilk make me ill.
