Cary Grant and Randolph Scott: A Love Story?

Back in the heyday of the studio system, the studios invested great amounts of time and effort in the building and maintaining of a movie star's image and in cases like Rock Hudson, covering up the star's true sexual identity. The Village Voice has a short piece about Cary Grant and Randolph Scott that includes a number of photos that definitely do not come across very "butch" or even hetero for that matter. From a brief Google search, it seems that at various times contemporaries commented on the couple and more recently Betty White had a slip of the tongue that suggest that Grant was gay or bi-sexual. They shared a home on again and off again for about 12 years.

We will probably never know the full truth, but it is obviously fun to speculate about two such major stars in their day playing for our team. Plus, the more the media looks at public figures from the past who are now reported as having been gay or bi-sexual, the more it may help open some minds. A further bonus is that it makes the Bible beaters go crazy! Here are some highlights with photos set out below:

[T]he following photos I've collected over the years of Grant with Randolph Scott. Grant's 'friendship' with the devastatingly handsome Scott was remarkably open and fairly candid in the dangerously oppressed 1930s.

"There were several photo shoots for the fan magazines of the two 'merry bachelors,' who for several years shared a beach house in Santa Monica, as well as a mansion in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles, which was commonly referred to in the press as 'Bachelor Hall,' both before, during, and after their various marriages to women (they had seven marriages between them).

"These photos are just a few of the many I've found, and I find it so perfectly clear that they were much more than just 'roommates.' It's obvious that they shared a great love and were just about the most physically gorgeous couple in Hollywood history."
